The Official Newspaper Of the SDAPÖ

SDAPÖ is approaching its 10 year anniversary in December of this year. With a decade under our belts, the world has changed much. The Great Powers are once again fighting over imperial ambitions, such as with the recent Svalbard Crisis. And while the Powers put it to rest and settled it peacefully, what happened if it didn't? Or any crisis between the Powers, even? Europe would go to war, and force workers to spend day and night fulfilling their Imperial goals.

But, all across Europe fellow socialists are challenging the Imperialists. In Italy, in April of 1897 the Italian newspaper Avanti! published a heartfelt article stating how Imperialism is slowly being pushed back there. Earlier that year, in late January, here in Austria-Hungary the Czechoslav Trade Union Association was founded.

Yet, there is a rocky future ahead. With such atrocities around the world such as in Lattimer, Pennsylvania, United Sates of America. When, on September 10th, unarmed, peaceful protesters who worked in the mines of Lattimer marched for better wages. Along the way they encountered the police, and while a policeman tried to take an American flag from the protester and the police tried to disperse the marchers a minor scuffle started. The police ended up opening fire on the unarmed crowd of marchers and 19 were killed.

The future is dark and yet bright; it is up to us, the workers, us, the protectors of rights, us, the working class, to decide the fate of what will become of the world.

More Imperial Ambitions, What's New?

An advertisement for Laurin & Klement, one must think about the conditions of workers at the factories
It is sad to say that once again, the Austro-Hungarian government has expanded their imperial ambitions. Yes, they say they are claiming these random islands in the South Pacific, but many, are fearful it isn't. Military vessels were sent, and Austro-Hungarian troops were sent onto the islands. This is worrying. And more ridiculousness is added when the United States of America threatens naval action against the government, and the United Kingdom pushes for all claims to be removed from the uninhabited islands.

Along with this news the government kicks off spending into the automotive industry. Yes, they claim the economy will grow, but what will it cost? Thousands of workers loosing their lives due to horrid working conditions? More injured? And even more in long shifts to lowly go home with lowly wages? The workers must be protected.

Finally, we end on the laughably failed patriotic campaign the government started. Songs and posters were all over Vienna, Budapest, Innsbruck, etc. Yet, almost no one paid attention, and the ones that did saw it as weak. Maybe finally, the people are realizing, the government isn't so great after all.
