Moonbeam Conclusion - the Conclusion

"Owl descends on vole!" Agent Tsaeb yelled, landing a vicious triple-roundhouse to Wu's sternum.

"Very good!" Wu yelled - and kicked - back. "Eagle claw crushes fish!"

Tsaeb flew against the other side of the rocket. "Clever!"

The rocket began to rumble. And then they were airborne.

"This is the end!" Wu shouted, as the bay doors began to open, ready to deliver the satellite, and Wu backed up, ready to deliver more kung fu. "Sun abdicates in favor of moon!"

"All endings," Tsaeb parried. "Are but new beginnings."

He sidestepped Wu's blows, dancing around the satellite, as the earth below grew fainter and fainter. Also, at some point during this fight, I should mention, they both donned space suits. Because they were now fighting in space.

"Screaming eagle devours sparrow!" Wu yelled, trying to compensate for the rocket's pitch. "Falling boulder crushes mule!"

But none of his blows would connect. Agent Tsaeb had become one with the rocket - and he could see what he had always known. The only way to defeat chaos was to embrace it, to flow into it, to direct it against itself.

"Sun god's fury scorches plains! Chastised child learns his math! Lucky numbers beget naught but misfortune!" Wu yelled, as Tsaeb backed away from blow after blow, being pushed closer and closer to the satellite.

"Shining star," Tsaeb noted, as the moorings holding the satellite in place came loose. "Directs righteous fist."

And with that, he turned on the satellite's laser, the heat of the ray incinerating Wu as the rocket stages below him fell back to earth.

Tearing the laser off the satellite, Agent Tsaeb assumed a lotus pose, waiting for the neutered satellite to settle into orbit - whenceupon it would meet again his righteous fist.

12:06, CHAOS Control Tower - 6 minutes after Moonbeam launch

It wasn't even a fight. Every blow that wasn't blocked, parried, or sidestepped - and that was all of them, had no effect on Huojin. He didn't react to strikes to pressure points, he didn't react to crotch-shots, the man was unstoppable. Cornered, pinned, and with his massive meaty hands around her throat, agent Smyg knew this was how she would die.

And it wasn't all that bad. The satellite was launched. Russia would be burning. Koller would still be dead. There would have been nothing to live for had she survived anyhow - at the least, now, she could die a martyr of the revolution, giving her all to stop the corporate imperialist advance. Death, she found, was warm. As warm as a Hong Kong beachfront on a summer's day. As warm as Los Angeles, right before dusk. As warm as...actually, as warm as a man built like two brick shithouses being torched by a space-laser.

"Ahhhh! No!" Huojin screamed, flames licking at his face. "Not the beams! Anything but the beams! It's in my mouth!"

For effect, he jumped out the window.

And behind where his flaming husk once stood, was Koller, tapping the control tower's coordinates into the satellite control terminal.

"Some," he mused, wiping a trickle of blood from his mouth. "Do not like it hot."

"I hope you do."

President of the UN: "That's what the report says, yes."

Comrade Agent Smyg!

The Moonbeam project proves a grave danger to Soviet assets. Worst of all, a killsat engineered by the dictat of the proletariat could be beaten out by one built on capitalist decadence!

Preliminary intelligence shows that the launch code and blueprints for the project are scattered around the globe at CHAOS, Inc's international headquarters. Other agencies are likely also hunting for these as well, but you are to destroy the launch codes and delay the launch until the satellite's laser can be neutralized.

Your mission:
-Find and destroy Project Moonbeam's launch codes
-Destroy the laser on Project Moonbeam
-Neutralize any foreign agents who stand in your way

Generous Soviet Skill Ration:
-From Russia with Love: You learned from an early age that all a woman needs to do to get what she wants out of a man is to be a good actress, and a better lay. Getting information out of men is second nature to you. Killing them is first. (Bribe actions will automatically succeed on male assets, and chances at neutralizing one are greatly increased.)
-Off to Siberia!: It's a mystery how you ended up in the gulag, and it's twice as big a mystery how you ever got out. But one thing's for sure, you know exactly what a proper taskmaster can stand to gain through judicious use of bullet and lash. Now you have become fear, liquidator of inefficient assets. (For every KGB asset you liquidate, you gain an additional three clues.)
-Such is Life in Moscow: True Soviet comrade find no value in money. If comrade fall prey to capitalist decadence, is be disappearing. KGB is always watching. (Soviet assets cannot be bribed. If an asset is bribed through another agent's special ability, the asset will face a chance of being killed first.)
Pick a skill for your agent that would be suitable for this mission! We'll have the comrade dropped off and ready to defend Mother Russia by (January 2nd), unless you want to expedite this mission. We can run it as soon as tomorrow, but delay in communications might mean up to a three-day delay between communiques.

AGENT SMYG
LOCATION: HAVANA

Agent Comrade Smyg, good work on monitoring exports of the revolution to Latin America, but we have a much more important mission for you. Our agents have identified major CHAOS offices in fifteen cities around the globe, marked with a red dot on your map.

Out of these assets, three of these will be major offices. While we still have yet to pinpoint where they are, the most important offices are likely going to be located in cities with major financial districts - the executives at these offices are likely to know where the launch code is or will be at any given time. Intelligence suggests that the code is being carried by a courier who is traveling between cities to CHAOS safehavens around the globe until launch day. Intercepting this courier will be your only chance to get the code.

In what could be good or bad news, Dr. Randolph Koller, who you might have heard of on the news, is not dead. Intelligence points to a chance of Koller attempting to defect to the CIA when the storm interfered with the operation - but Koller is alive, and may be in possession of one or more items of interest pertaining to the locations of the blueprints, launch codes, or other important intel.

If you can find and detain him, this information would be most useful in completing your mission.

Clues:
-Executives at CHAOS offices in major cities will know where the courier is.
-Koller was attempting to defect to the CIA when he went missing at sea somewhere in the Carribean.
-There is a particularly large CHAOS office in London.

RinKou wrote:The phone rings as soon as you get into your hotel.

"Hello, this is Maria," she has a thick Cuban accent. A-yo. "From the Miami Nightlife dating service, you were looking for a date tonight, yes?"

Sounds like she's the fixer the agency set you up with. Well, looks like your feminine wiles will have to wait for the next target.

"If you are in the mood for Chinese food, I have a very handsome man from the Far East in town. He might seem a little uptight, but that's only because he does government work. You'll definitely have a story to tell after a night on the town with him."

You scribble down the info and address in case you need it in the future, but it doesn't seem too useful right now.

-

You head out to contact the other KGB asset stationed in the city. Following your map, you end up at a fairly upscale disco off the beachfront. A bouncer leads you upstairs into the champagne room.

"Comrade Smyg!" The dude's wearing a white suit with a huge gold chain. You have a feeling that if the two of you were still alive in ten years, this dude would be sitting in the same place, wearing the exact same outfit, with the exact same drink in his hand. "Welcome, welcome to my disco. I am Comrade Aleksey and I have good news for you, and I have bad news for you, and then I have some more good news, and then I have really good news. But first, we have a drink."

A girl drops by and hands you a vodka martini.

"Good news, we find your man, your Dr. Koller." He tosses a manila folder on the table, where some of the contents spill out. You can make out some headshots of Koller in a crowd. He's a lot younger than you expected him to be. He couldn't be a day over 40. Really young for a head engineer on such a prestigious project.

Aleksey pulls out a panned out photo, showing him boarding a plane headed to LA.

"And here is bad news. This photo is taken two hours ago."

He grabs a marker and makes two big circles next to Koller. "Good news again, no escort. We have reason to believe something did not go to plan even after he makes landfall."

"Best news," he drags a stack of papers from the folder. "Koller has booked a room at the Millenium Biltmore."

"Your tickets and reservations are in there," he nods, pointing to the folder. "In case you wanted to follow."

Clues:
-Koller is on a flight to LA and has a room booked at the Millenium Biltmore hotel.
-Koller does not have a CIA escort.

RinKou wrote:After thanking Comrade Aleksey sincerely, you hop on-board your flight to LA.

Arriving at the hotel, you find Koller in the lounge, sipping on a cocktail and absent-mindedly scanning the other patrons. Noticing the empty seat next to him, you decide to keep him company.

"You're here alone tonight?" You ask, ordering a drink.

"I could ask you the same question," he says.

"Only if you are."

Your drink arrives. The two of you chat for a while.

"So are you in town for business or pleasure?" you ask.

"A little bit of both," he says. "When I was a boy in Brandenburg, my father owned a cinema. He was an avid watcher of Hollywood films, and that's what I grew up with. Greta Garbo, James Cagney, nothing but hours of big stars on silver screens. Thought I'd swing by and see everything before I get on with my trip."

You nod.

"How about you?" he asks. "I'm guessing you're not from around here either."

"Business, mostly," you say. "It's a business I like, though, so not too much different from pleasure."

"What kind of business?" he asks. "If you don't mind me saying, you're a damned fine sight, I'd bet you're an actress."

"Well, something like that." You shrug. "And I don't mind you saying that at all."

It doesn't take long to get up to his room.

-

He unlocks the door, and makes a quick show of tidying up. You grab some papers lying around and say something about taking a minute to freshen up. You skim them quickly as you strip down to something more comfortable.

The locations of all the major CHAOS labs are listed on these documents, as well as the identity of the courier carrying the launch codes. Memorizing what you can, you slip the papers into your clothes and open the door.

Only to find Koller has a gun pulled on you.

"Alright, so who are you really?"

You could probably easily disarm him if needed, but you can tell he's not one to shoot a woman, even if he had no other choice.

"Agent Smyg," you confess. "KGB. I'm trying to find the launch codes to delay the Moonbeam launch in time to disable the laser."

Koller nods.

"Well, the courier's no use then. His code's a decoy. Putting that into the computer will only arm the satellite. I've got the real code, but..." He scans your robe, looking to see if he can make out the outline of a weapon, but he does linger a bit at the edges. "It's hidden."

He taps his temple. "Hidden right here. And this isn't to say I don't trust you, but my CIA contact ended up being...an agent of CHAOS. I hope you don't mind me not telling you the code until we're about to use it."

You nod in return.

"If the CIA has been infiltrated," you say, "What makes you think the KGB has not? Why would you tell me any of this?"

"I had a good feeling about you," Koller says. He starts to lower the gun. "But I don't know that the KGB hasn't been infiltrated. I'm willing to help, but I won't help your agency - only you."

You plant a soft kiss on his lips and begin to gently push the gun away. There'll be time to plan your next move in the morning. It's not like you didn't have a good feeling about him either.

Clues:
-The CIA has been infiltrated by agents of CHAOS, though nobody is sure to what extent.

With the coast clear, you head out to hail a cab. You almost kick yourself for not booking one from your room, since being seen in the open like this is a rookie mistake, but you panicked. Whoever killed Aleksey was probably already in town, and every second would count. You couldn't sit around for ten minutes in the lobby and wait for a cab to arrive.

After what seems like forever, a cab finally stops for you and takes you to the airport, where you have no trouble getting on your plane to Panama.

Hopefully, the logged flight to Havana will slow the assassin down.

RinKou wrote:As soon as you land in Panama, you book flights to Moscow. When Koller finds out you're heading to Moscow instead of Asia, though, he's...well, furious isn't the right word. He's definitely unhappy, though.

But hey, now you guys have a whole flight to talk about it.

-

"I know you trust your own contacts in Moscow," Koller says, "But the agent CHAOS sent after me is...he's not...not very susceptible to harm."

"What do you mean, not susceptible to harm?"

"I mean, I'm sure he's a normal human being, it's just that, I've seen him take hits that would put any trained man down, and still keep going like it was nothing. I've seen him get shot and not react," Koller says. "I just don't think staying in one place is going to be the best idea. If he catches up to us, I don't know if we'll be able to stop him, no matter how good security is."

"Mn," you nod. "Well, at the least, we've put an ocean between him and us. We can decide on where to go after we land."

While uncomfortable with the prospect of sitting anywhere for too long, Koller goes on about the other CHAOS assets he's aware of.

"Well, on Santa Barbara, there were at least two other assets," Koller muses. "The first guy wasn't a big deal. Just a local cab driver who ended up driving enough of us around to start getting paid extra to mention the other passengers he was taking on. By the time I left, it was starting to get to his head. The guy was parading around like he was a full agent. Even bought himself a gun he's got hidden in the dash, though he probably has no idea how to use it."

You snicker. Every agency has its share of over-confident informants.

"The other one...Her name was Yulia."

You stop snickering. "Yulia? Black hair, scar on her neck?"

He nods.

"That bitch," you mutter. "You don't have to say anything about her, we were in the same graduating class."

You flash back to the KGB class of '69. Yulia was always top of the class, and always rubbing that in your face. Course, she only got to the top of the class by screwing the instructor (which you were also doing). It wasn't the fact that she was top of the class she was rubbing at you, it was the fact that she could take any man from under your thumb, and that was, like, the pinnacle of both bitchery, and like, just the worst lack of solidarity you've ever seen. I mean, like, way to reinforce the patriarchy, bitch. Fuck.

So when she betrayed you again in Indonesia, you did what you should've done a long time ago, and just slit her throat. You thought it was the last you would ever hear of her, but Yulia has a strange way of biting you in the ass. You'll have to remember to kill that bitch again.

You two spend the rest of the flight reminiscing about the various assholes in your respective agencies, almost forgetting about actually getting information out of him. But hey, he'll share info now without need for prodding.

Your handler, Agent RinKou, quickly debriefs the you and you both quietly lament the loss of dear Aleksey, who gave his life in service of Mother Russia.

With that out of the way, though, you bring up Yulia.

Rin strokes his magnificent Russian beard and nods. "Well, we had a suspicion that Yulia may have survived, but we weren't entirely sure. A suspected agent of CHAOS matching her description was spotted in Santa Barbara not too long ago. We have reason to believe she's taken over as station chief there, ever since her boss was sent after Koller - and now you."

"Speaking of whom," he continues, "We have reason to believe he's still hot on your tail."

"Well, it's a good thing we aren't staying then," you nod.

You expect Rin to say something about how Koller isn't going anywhere, and the you're silly to think that any one agent can get through the KGB headquarter's walls, not to mention getting soft. (After which the CHAOS agent shows up and single-handedly murders the entire station before you and Koller manage a daring escape) But he doesn't.

"Good move," he concedes. "Koller's right, we don't know if, or how, infiltrated our own organization is."

"We have what might be good news, though," he adds. "The CIA isn't as extensively infiltrated as we initially thought. If you could find some way to get the double agent's identity to a loyal agent, your would-be assassin's job will be just that much harder."

"We'll get a fax to your next safehouse as soon as we can identify the closest loyal CIA asset to you."

You salute and ready to leave.

"And Agent Smyg," Rin says, as you're halfway out the door.

"Sir?"

"Don't go getting yourself killed out there. The world's depending on you."

Not one to waste your time on the potentially dead, you leave Koller at the safehouse and head to the airport to get updates on other agent movements in the area.

You make your way into the filing cabinets fairly easily, and begin rifling through the files for booked flights into and out of Hong Kong. What could the rest of the world's agents be up to that's been so under the radar? Businessman, businessman, tourist, businessman, to-

Oh. Oh shit.

If there was one agent heading for Hong Kong, that'd be bad. But three particularly sketchy individuals are about to land, and one is already here. They must've all gotten a lead on Koller's position.

Before you can look into just who these agents are, though, somebody kicks in the door, and a caucasian man assaults you! Putting your wits to use, you toss the files towards him, obscuring his vision. With a few deft blows to his vulnerables, you manage to put him down. With a deft kick to the face, you manage to keep him there.

That's when you hear the clapping.

"Bravo, madame," the Asian guy hanging out the the corner applauds. "Theatricality and deception. Powerful tools to the uninitiated."

He gets up. "But we are initiated, aren't we? Fellow agents of the great powers?"

You turn and ready yourself. The first fight didn't take too much out of you. And men have the great weakness of having overtly sensitive genitals.

"Only one of us works for a great power," you say, launching a barrage of strikes against him. "Traitor to the revolution!"

He easily parries them. "You think the martial arts are your ally, but you merely adopted them."

There, an opening! You make a strike for his neck, but he sidesteps that.

"I was born into the martial arts, molded by it." With a quick movement, and a very loud, "Kingfisher Spears Prey!", he punches you in the stomach, causing you to lose your breath. "I didn't learn subterfuge until I was already a man, and by then, it was nothing but boring!"

With a well-placed kick, he knocks you into a chair, where the second agent is able to get to his feet and tie you down.

"We were bound to meet sometime, Agent..." the Chinaman goes through your pockets. "Smyg. KGB, huh?"

"He's already gone, another KGB escort's taking him back to Moscow as we speak," you say.

"KGB?" the first agent says. "Dammit, I'm Stasi! I need Koller's intel to finish destroying the labs! We can't let the agents of CHAOS continue developing these weapons of terror!"

The Chinaman makes a "Fuck." face. It looks like :|

Then, because today wasn't convoluted enough, the doors get kicked in again, and everybody finds themselves at gunpoint. A very large, menacing man leads the group.

"Well, then," he says. "Now that you all have come to the conclusion that you're on the same side, allow me to introduce myself. Agent 'Orago', CIA. Better known as Huojin - agent of CHAOS."

The assault team puts the German and the Chinaman in plastic handcuffs and puts bags over all your heads.

"Mr. Cain wants you all alive. Which means we're all going to become very good friends. Just the three of us, and my acquaintance, Mr. Electrode."

I don't even know how to start describing how awesome this was. Anyway, turn reports ahoy (and yes, I realise most my turns were copy and pastes of one another with the location changed - to quote Agent Tsaeb, I'm "not one to change a winning routine" :P ).

Valiant Agent Tsaeb!

Project Moonbeam proves to be a great danger to both the western imperialists and the revisionist swine! However, if we ourselves are not careful, we too might find ourselves in its broiling gaze.

Research shows the launch code and blueprints for the project are scattered around the globe at CHAOS, Inc's international headquarters. Other agencies are likely hunting for these as well, but you need to get there first. Let the others worry about stopping the launch. You are to copy the blueprints so that the Glorious People's Republic can once again dominate the heavens as is our birthright.

Your mission:
-Find and copy Project Moonbeam's blueprints
-Neutralize any foreign agents who stand in your way

Great and Harmonious Advantage:
-Shaolin Shadow-Boxing: You spent your childhood carrying water, running errands up mountains, and washing cars at the local monastery. This lifetime of menial labor has taught you how to get the first decisive strike in in any sticky situation. (You automatically win the first round of combat.)
-Death before Shamefur Dispray: You are die before bring dishonor to Great People's Republic. Valorous agents of Glorious People's Republic show supreme loyalty to Grand Forward March. (Chinese assets and agents will not reveal any intel under duress.)
-Chinese Knock-off: You've spent your childhood watching your parents steal foreign products and remarket them with a Chinese flair. You've watched your government steal foreign ideologies and rebrand them with Chinese characteristics. You've stolen their ideas and use it to steal foreign agencies' specialties. (When in a city with a foreign asset, you can take on a watered-down version of one of their abilities at random. This is a free action.)
Pick a skill for your agent that would be suitable for this mission! We'll have the agent dropped off and ready to advance Glorious People's Republic by (January 2nd), unless you want to expedite this mission. We can run it as soon as tomorrow, but delay in communications might mean up to a three-day delay between communiques.

AGENT TSAEB
LOCATION: TOKYO

Agent Tsaeb, we'll have to divert some resources from monitoring the Japanese imperialists. We have a much more important mission for you. Our agents have identified major CHAOS offices in fifteen cities around the globe, marked with a red dot on your map.

Out of these assets, three of them will be laboratory sites. While we have yet to pinpoint exactly where those sites are, intelligence shows that at least one of them is located somewhere in Latin America surrounding the launch site in Santa Barbara. Project Moonbeam blueprints are split into three pieces - the Engines, Laser, and Communication Array. Each laboratory was working on a different part of the satellite, and each one will have to be visited to copy the blueprints.

Clues:
-At least one CHAOS lab is located somewhere in Latin America.
-Koller was attempting to defect to the CIA when he went missing at sea somewhere in the Carribean.
-A large CHAOS compound is located in Hong Kong.

It doesn't take you too long to find the CHAOS lab in the jungles outside of Caracas. Snapping a guard's neck with a stealthy, "Mono volador toma fruta!" you vault a security fence and clamber into a vent. Once inside, you sneak along in the shadows, throwing the occasional guard into a vat of glowing liquid.

After some minor exploration, you find the central test chamber for the Project Moonbeam laser. The alarm goes off as soon as you swipe the blueprints, though, and you find yourself surrounded by masked gunmen!

Thinking quickly, you settle on a technique that you still haven't perfected. It's tricky, but nothing else would work in this situation.

"Neuva hombre esquiva balas!" you shout, bending over as soon as they start firing. With their shots gone right over you, you manage to land several decisive blows to the nearest two guards, sending them floorbound. Before their leader can react, you land a well-placed kick to his chest, sending him into the laser test chamber, vaporizing him.

"Parece como si no pudiera..." You say, turning around. "Soportar el calor."

And with that, you jump up a vent and disappear.

Clues:
-Koller was attempting to defect to the CIA when he went missing at sea somewhere in the Carribean.

Landing in Hong Kong refreshed and ready to avenge your master (whose temple was burned down by CHAOS agents in your youth), you make a beeline for the CHAOS complex - what seems to be your standard downtown financial tower.

Slipping in under the guise of your average salaryman, you hop in an elevator with a few scientists and watch them enter a code that takes the car deep underground. The doors open to a vast research complex dotted with endless arrays of monitors and supercomputers. This must be the communications array lab.

Finding a dark corner to sneak into, you doff your suit to reveal the sneaking suit you were wearing underneath! Shuffling about in disguise brings nothing but dishonor. A true agent has no disguise but the shadows!

Slinking between beams and behind computer banks, you finally get to the center of the lab, where you carefully swipe the assorted papers lying about. It is about this time that you are interrupted by a man tapping you on your back.

As you turn, he swings, hoping to suckerpunch you, but your superior martial arts training kicks in. With a well-placed block, you swing back, but are blocked in turn! An honorable opponent, versed in the arts of combat! The two of you exchange blows, neither landing a decisive hit, for several minutes. Monitors break and computers explode, showering sparks and thick white smoke across the lab, even when you're fighting nowhere near them for some reason.

"How can you defend against my Eagle Claw Strike?" Your assailant shouts, attempting to catch you off-guard with a Black Dragon Devours Carp.

You defend against it as easily as you did his Charging Bull Gores Imperceptive Farmer.

"Do you think I am but any mere agent? I recognize you, Wu Rae-Kwon, he who burned the temple of my master!" You respond with a Heron Braves Snowstorm.

The fiendish Wu's blocks are too quick, though. "Agent Tsaeb! So you survived!" He begins the Clever Monkey Moves Boulders technique, pushing you up onto a catwalk above the array testing chamber.

"Yes, but you," in a split second, you dodge his Tiger Claw Crushes Rabbit, and land a decisive Lion Stands to Get Fruit to his midsection, stunning him. "Will not be so lucky!"

The hum of the array below echoes in your ears, and you take a half-step back, and before he can recover, plant a well-placed kick into his chest, sending him into the array below.

You shuffle the papers to make sure everything is there.

"Guess he wanted to see what all the buzz was about," you say to yourself, then hop up into a vent and disappear. You're not one to change a winning routine.

What there is, is a collection of infiltrated state corporations, each in charge of a little bit of something that CHAOS has an interest in. There's the Office of Sprocket Production, the Office of Spring Production, the Office of Switch Production, and so on and so forth.

By the end of the day, your knees are raw from crawling through vents, and you seem to have developed some sort of cough, due to the increased asbestos rations approved for state building drywall. What you don't develop, though, is some sense of idea of where the last CHAOS lab is.

You eschew a commercial flight for one into Santo Domingo for a ride into town on an agency spyplane. You don't have time to sit around and watch stewardesses tell you what to do in the event of an emergency. Not when you have work that needs to be done, and a deadline this tight to get it done on.

You check your suit one last time, check your armaments, check your Little Red Book.

The plane makes a low pass over the lab, and you take your leave, aiming for the skylight. Clouds whip past your face, trees and buildings grow larger and larger, and then - crash, through the skylight, into a guard, and onto your feet.

Asians always land on their feet.

With two well-placed throwing knives, you silence the two other guards, watching the three of them fall over the railing and into the pit below.

There's no time for stealth - Beijing needs these last blueprints, and they need them before the capitalist pig-dogs can get their satellite into space. The alarm goes off, and blast doors come down around you, but you don't pay them any mind. You just stalk through the halls of the lab, sword drawn, cutting down all in your path, until you find it - the rocket test control panel, bathed in red emergency lighting,

You vault in through the large pane glass windows that every room in this bunker has (which, in retrospect, probably made all those blast doors kind of worthless). The scientists, cowering under their desks, scatter out the door when they see you. All except for one of them.

"Just who do you think you are?" he asks, turning from the control panel. "Running around my facility? Cutting down my staff? Do you think you can stand in the way of science?"

He throws his labcoat open and pulls out a sword of his own. "Do you think you can stand in the way of progress‽"

He charges you, but you easily parry. He may not be cowardly, but his strokes, elementary. You sidestep half of them, pushing his blade into mounted beakers and walls of charts.

"Fool," you say, forcing his blade to destroy his own work. "Your wrath is your undoing." The computers and consoles around you erupt into showers of sparks. Then, tiring of this game, you begin your offensive. You bring swing upon swing down upon him, forcing him backwards, desperately attempting to parry.

With him cornered again at the main console, you raise your blade for an overhand swing, giving him just enough time to block it with his. The grind of metal-on-metal grates at both of your ears and you slowly push your blade closer to his face.

"Wh-who are you?" you cries.

"I am science," you say. "I am progress." You lift your blade, watching him nearly stand up, now that he doesn't have the force of your sword to push against, putting him right where you want him.

"I am China, true master of the stars."

And with that, and a well-placed kick, he's launched over the control panel, which, coincidentally, also overlooked the main rocket test-firing silo. His flailing arms mash at the control panel on the way out, activating the rocket's test-fire mode, incinerating him before the fall could kill him.

Extracting the computer disc with the rocket blueprints on them, you look out into the vast pit, charred by the repeated test-firings of the rocket.

"Looks like he had to jet," you say to yourself, then jump up a conveniently placed vent.

If you can manage to arrest her, you could probably get some information on Koller's whereabouts.

She doesn't seem to be making any plans to leave the city, though. After a quick look around, she sneaks into the files.

"One way in, one way out," the German says, readying to burst in.

"Two ways in," you correct him, jumping up a vent.

Clambering into position, you watch the German burst through the door. The woman has her wits around her, though, and throws a handful of files in his face. In the split second when his vision is obscured, she launches a vicious assault on his pressure points, and delivers one last kick to the now downed agent.

Clever. You slide down into the room and give her a standing ovation. Just who does this woman work for? CIA? KGB?

"Bravo, madame," You applaud. "Theatricality and deception. Powerful tools to the uninitiated."

He take a few strides towards her. "But we are initiated, aren't we? Fellow agents of the great powers?"

She turns and readies herself, scoping you out for potential strikezones and vulnerabilities.

"Only one of us works for a great power," she says, launching a barrage of strikes against you. "Traitor to the revolution!"

The revisionist thinks she can overcome you. How juvenile. "You think the martial arts are your ally, but you merely adopted them." You easily parry her blows.

She takes your monologue as a sign of weakness, and tries to aim a chop at your neck, but she's far too slow.

"I was born into the martial arts, molded by it." With a quick movement, and a very loud, "Kingfisher Spears Prey!", you land a punch in her stomach, knocking the wind out of her. "I didn't learn subterfuge until I was already a man, and by then, it was nothing but boring!"

With a well-placed kick, you knock her into a chair, where the German is able to get to his feet and tie her down.

"We were bound to meet sometime, Agent..." you go through her pockets. "Smyg. KGB, huh?"

"He's already gone, another KGB escort's taking him back to Moscow as we speak," she says.

No matter. You already got what you wanted. Koller was just the soy sauce on the rice cake. Whatever intel he has is worthless to the KGB - CHAOS is no match for the Glorious People's Republic.

"KGB?" the German says. "Dammit, I'm Stasi! I need Koller's intel to finish destroying the labs! We can't let the agents of CHAOS continue developing these weapons of terror!"

You make a "Fuck." face. It looks like :|

Given how gung-ho he was about potentially eliminating the woman if need be, him finding out she was KGB was probably a bad move. You overlooked that. You should've known better than to work with revisionists.

Then, because today wasn't convoluted enough, the doors get kicked in again, and everybody finds themselves at gunpoint. A very large, menacing man leads the group.

CIA

Agent Huojin!

Project Moonbeam poses a real danger to freedom, *static*ocracy, and the Amer*static* way. *static*

And we like that, don't we?

Good job infiltrating the CIA, agent, but we've got a lot more work ahead of us if CHAOS is to reign!

Our other plants have found that numerous intelligence agencies are trying to track down our launch codes and blueprints for various reasons, on top of trying to prevent the launch of the killsat. Don't worry too much about the codes or plans being destroyed, though, Mr. Cain's got everything he needs hidden safely away. We just got two things for you to worry about - make sure the killsat gets launched, and while you wait for that to happen, make sure agents trying to copy the plans don't make it out alive.

Your mission:
-Facilitate the launch of Project Moonbeam
-Neutralize any agents trying to copy the blueprints to Project Moonbeam

Background:
-Little Puerto Rico: Growing up on the mean streets of New York's taught you a couple things - how to always watch your back, how to jump fences, and how to settle gang disputes with musical numbers. You're more adept that noticing when you're being followed, more able to lose your tail, and God help the poor bastard if you start snapping your fingers. (Chances of noticing and escaping an agent following you are greatly increased)
-Dallas!: Your dad was an infantryman, a cattleman, and a defensive lineman. So was his dad, and his dad's dad. And you aren't gonna be the nancyboy who breaks that chain. Your days on the football field have taught you a thing or two about taking a punch. (You require one more combat success to neutralize than other agents)
-The Beaches South of LA: You got suckered into the company after talking to a guy you thought was a talent agent. In fact, most of your peers have half a mind that you still believe that. Given your down-to-earthness, naievete, and charm, though, assets belonging to foreign agencies are more inclined to talk loosely around you. (Bribe action has a much greater chance of success when used on foreign assets)

Pick a skill for your agent that would be suitable for this mission! We'll have you dropped off and ready to spread CHAOS by (January 2nd), unless you want to expedite this mission. We can run it as soon as tomorrow, but delay in communications might mean up to a three-day delay between communiques.

AGENT HUOJIN
LOCATION: SANTA BARBARA

Agent Huojin, good work on prepping the launch site, but we have a more important mission for you. Enemy agents have identified major CHAOS offices in fifteen cities around the globe, marked with a red dot on your map.

We've transmitted the locations of the blueprints and the dossier on the decoy launch code courier. Don't worry about the courier. He can handle himself well enough - you can either guard the labs with the blueprints, attempt to intercept the agents trying to steal them, or kill off their assets to slow down their hunt.

We still need you to finish filling out the fake bio for the CIA database. Pick one of the three backgrounds we sent you before you start the mission.

Speaking of the CIA, we don't know how much longer the cover will hold up, but for now, CIA agents don't have any suspicions about you and can be treated as friendlies.

In bad news, though, Koller found out about our infiltration of the CIA at the last minute and used the storm as a diversion to escape from our agents. He has sensitive material on him pertaining to the location of the blueprints and the actual launch codes. Find and terminate him as well.

Clues:
-We lost Koller somewhere in the Carribean.
-The Stasi is looking for blueprints, though we don't know why yet.

Koller is a major threat right now, so we'll have to go after him. If we can, lets snoop around his place, maybe break into his computers to see if there's any sign of where he's heading. If there is, head there.

Barring any digital help, lets head out to Santo Domingo and search for Koller there. Cast our nets and see if we can't hunt that sonofabitch down. If we find him, put a bullet in his brain at the earliest opportunity.
SpoilerShow
With a well-placed kick, you knock down the door to Koller's apartment, and begin to ransack the place for clues. You overturn mattresses, tear down shower curtains, pull books off of bookcases. It doesn't accomplish much, but it does make you feel better for losing him.

After you finish trashing the place, you find half of a shredded flight schedule. At the very least, you can make out that Koller has a flight booked out of Miami. You can't tell when, or where to, but you can always crack a few heads when you get there to find out.

-

Before you leave town, the local junior agent drops off some new intel - the KGB agent is looking for the launch codes, but is hot on Koller's tail. You should probably find him before he realizes that Koller is carrying the real ones and the courier's just a decoy.

-

Upon landing in Miami, you make a few phone calls to get more info on the area.

The KGB is using a disco on the beachfront as a front, while the MSS has an agent working out of a Chinese restaurant downtown.

Either's as good a place to start looking for clues as any.

Clues:
-Koller has a flight booked out of Miami.
-The KGB agent is hot on Koller's tail.
-The Stasi is looking for blueprints, though we don't know why yet.

Lets head over to the KGB hideout on the beachfront. Break in quickly and see who's there. The junior agent should be hanging around, so take him down. Ideally without killing him so we can do some interrogation later. Search the place for clues but be ready to tangle with him, should he arrive on the scene.

See mainly if we can find out anything about Koller's present whereabouts and when we can expect him in Miami. If he turns up, we can rush over to the airport and intercept him.

Oh, and when we're done extracting information from people in the KGB hideout, we can finish them off.
SpoilerShow
The disco is hopping by the time you arrive. Not wanting to waste time by waiting in line, you sneak in through the back door and begin looking for anybody who looks like a Russian agent.

That's when you spot him in the champagne room, in a skybox above the dancefloor. White suit, gold chain. You would recognize that get-up anywhere. Only a junior agent would wear something so ridiculous.

You make your way up the stairs, where the agent is whispering something to the brunette draped over his shoulder. She giggles, but then cuts short after they both notice you. The agent looks you in the eye, and you can see the moment he registers that you are here for him. They always have the same look.

He dives for his gun, but you manage to knock him away with a well-timed boot to the face. The girl screams and tries to scurry off, but, deciding she's seen too much, you grab her and throw her through the glass onto the dance floor below.

The Russian agent jumps to his feet and lands a series of what would be devastating blows to the average man. But agents of CHAOS are no average men. Grabbing him by the throat, and holding him out over the dance floor, you begin the interrogation.

"Where is Koller?" You ask, watching him struggle to hold onto your massive arms.

"To hell with you!" The agent replies.

You put more pressure on his throat. "I'm asking again, nicely. Where is Koller?"

"You...You don't scare me." He struggles to catch a breath. "Who are you?"

"Agent...Orago," you remember your cover. "CIA."

"Bullshit!" He cries. "I knew Agent Orago. I killed Agent Orago."

"And now I will kill you," you say, "Unless you tell me where Koller is."

You notice a keyring in his jacket. As good a clue as any you'd get out of him.

"You'll kill me either way," he says. "Do what you came here for then."

"With pleasure," you shrug. With a little extra pressure, you crush his neck. Pulling the keys from his jacket, you let his body fall onto the dancefloor.

You find the filing cabinet in the office and go through the files left over. Koller left for LA two days ago, and a KGB agent just left to follow him. Looks like the specifics of the trip have been blacked out, but you have enough contacts in the city to try to track them down.

You shoot the bouncer on the way out. The asshole was probably an agent too.

Clues:
-Koller was heading to LA as of yesterday.
-The KGB agent has just landed in LA.
-The KGB knows your cover story. If the KGB agent gets in contact with a CIA asset, your cover will be blown.

-The Stasi is looking for blueprints, though we don't know why yet.

Goddamn Koller. Goddamn Aleksey. And Goddamn the fucking KGB.

Lets head to the airport. First plane to LA. If only we could get a special chartered plane. Ah well. If Koller has left LA, the KGB guys will be following him, so maybe we can intercept him at the airport. If that fails, hit up our CHAOS and CIA informants and get as much information as we can about their possible destinations. If the CIA fella makes me for a CHAOS agent, we'll have to deal with him too. Maybe I can swap identities with him when he's dead.
SpoilerShow
As soon as you arrive in LA, stop by the police headquarters downtown. The CIA is still good for something, at least, and that's in putting people where they can get you the most intel.

"Found your man, Agent Huojin," the asset, a slightly pudgey desk sergeant nods, obviously pleased with himself. "Koller checked into the Millennium Biltmore last night, checked out this morning, with a flight to Mexico City connecting to another flight to Havana. Here's the thing, though, he booked two tickets."

"Bastard," you slam your fist on his desk. "He's defected to the KGB then."

"Looks like it," the cop nods. "What're you gonna do about it, boss?"

"Same thing I do whenever this happens, sergeant," you say, getting up. "Terminate him."

-

You head back to the airport and get ready to book your next flight, calling up the travel agent on the CHAOS payroll.

"Get me into Havana," you say. "On the double."

"Havana, sir?" she asks.

The man in line behind you starts checking his watch very conspicuously.

"Havana," you nod. Even though this is a phone. "And I needed to be there yesterday."

"But sir," your contact says, "Your mark's got another flight booked for Panama."

"What do you mean Panama? He has a flight to Havana."

The man behind you clears his throat.

"He's made two reservations, sir. We don't know where he's gone."

"What do you mean you don't know where he's gone?"

The man behind you taps his foot. Loudly.

"I mean there's two flights booked under his name. He could be in either, the agent he's with could be in either. They could've split up for all I know, but he's only going to be in one of them."

"Excuse me," the man behind you says. "Other people are waiting for the phone."

You take the opportunity to throw the impatient asshole into the phonebooth. Probably should find a coin to flip or something.

Clues:
-The KGB's caught up to Koller.
-Koller is either in Havana or Panama City, and may or may not be escorted by the KGB agent.
-If the KGB agent is not with Koller, the agent is either in Havana or Panama City.
-The KGB knows your cover story. If the KGB agent gets in contact with a CIA asset, your cover will be blown.

Stupid goddamn Koller. Striding back and forth through the check-in lounge, I glance up at the departures board, the flights ticking over. If the KGB told the CIA and my cover is blown, Havana could be a red herring. But what if it's a genuine lead?

Coming to a decision, I stride over to the check-in desks, placing my alternate passport and booking forms on the counter. "Checking in for my flight to Panama City." If that KGB agent is all I find in Panama City, I'm going to make that bastard wish he'd never been born. First I'll find out who he's told about me. Then he'll tell me where Koller is. A smile tugging at my face, I take my tickets and head off to find a bar in the departure lounge.
SpoilerShow
You take a quick power-nap on the plane, visions of electrodes and cattle brands dancing in your head. The landing jostles you awake, though, right before it got to the good part.

Panama City's a relatively untapped intelligence market for CHAOS, so you're going to be doing all the leg-work on your own this time. Making your way into the airport's files, you ready yourself to do some digging, when you notice a customs agent already going through files. In fact, going through the very files you were going to be looking at.

You lock the door, loudly.

"Who do you work for?"

The agent jumps. "A Stasi agent, sir. I just get him the info, I don't know anything, really!"

You snatch the files out of his hands. Looks like you chose the right city. The bad news is, this file is old, and there's no mention of Koller or his contact booking lodging or transportation in the city. You just missed them again.

"Shit," you mutter, throwing the folder. "What else do you know about this man?"

"He was with a woman!" the agent quivers. "They were speaking in Russian, that's all I know!"

Russian woman, huh. Yulia, one of the KGB plants you worked with in Santa Barbara had some stories about a female KGB agent she used to work with. If this is the same woman, you could probably take the time to swing by Santa Barbara to get more info first. This trail's gone mostly cold anyway, at least until the computers can log where Koller and his girlfriend have booked their next flights.

The customs agent might just make a good asset to have in updating you while you go get more information. Or you could always just kill him. There's always that chance that he'll alert the Stasi to your mission and location.

Or...you could use him to also give you information on the Stasi agent's location. You needed to take him out too, after all.

Clues:
-The KGB agent is currently with Koller.
-The KGB agent is a woman - one one of your contacts may have extensive knowledge of.
-The KGB knows your cover story. If the KGB agent gets in contact with a CIA asset, your cover will be blown.

-The Stasi is looking for blueprints, though we don't know why yet.
-There is a Stasi informant in Panama City.

Fucking Koller. Looks like that's a lost cause for now. In the mean time I'll have to check out the Stasi. Time to interrogate this customs agent a little, find out what he knows. If it looks like he's keeping something back, maybe I'll have someone to test out the electrodes on after all. If he cooperates though, it could prove a handy asset.

Taking off my suit jacket and hanging it on the doorknob, I undo my cufflinks and roll up my sleeves. The customs agent's eyes flick to my Beretta M9 in its shoulder holster.

"Have a seat. Maybe you can help me out and tell me a little about your friend." This man is either leaving this room mine or not at all. If the information is stale, I'll swing by Santa Barbara instead.
SpoilerShow
"I don't know his name, just how to contact him," the agent says, trying to find somewhere to back into.

"You seem nervous," you say. "Do I scare you?"

"Yes, sir," the agent quivers. "Or no, sir, whichever you'd rather hear, sir."

"Good," you say, cracking your knuckles. "Why don't you take a seat, get comfortable."

You pull a cigarette from your jacket. "Do you smoke?"

He nods.

You take a drag as you light it and to hand it to him - then, grabbing his hand as he reaches for it, flip it around and drive it within a half-inch of his eye. "Cigarettes are bad for your health, Armando." (You read his name tag.)

Ashing it, you flip it back round and hand it to him filter first this time. "Get in contact with your friend for me."

He nods and heads for the phone in the room.

You go back to your jacket and prepare your pocketphone - capable of making calls from anywhere in a populated area. With a battery pack that kept it charged for a whole eight hours, the whole thing was only three pounds. There was another thing the CIA was great at - state of the art technology, even for CHAOS.

You dial Yulia's office, and leave instructions for wiretapping the customs agent's call, then give him the go-ahead to dial.

"Hello? Yes, this is Agent Rodriguez," Armando says. "(Answering machine,)" he mouths. "Intel reports Koller landing at Tocumen International, escorted by a female KGB agent, no lead on current locale, over."

He hangs up, after a little typing on Yulia's end, she finally responds with, "Looks like the call was routed to Hong Kong, Huo. Still no update on Koller and friend's location, but if you swing by, I think I have a file on his little friend, sit tight, and I'll have it faxed over."

You and Armando share the room for a while longer while Yulia faxes in the dossier on the agent she worked with. Agent [NAMEWITHHELD], KGB graduating class of 1969. Previous operations across Europe, Indonesia (where she discovered Yulia's affiliation with CHAOS, and moved to terminate), and now this. Also a massive slut.

You can't tell if that last comment was always part of her file or just recently penned in, but you make a point to memorize her face and common disguises and aliases.

Just then, another fax comes through - 'Good work, Rodriguez. Target acquired.'

Welly well well. Everything just worked out swimmingly.

Clues:
-Koller and the KGB agent are likely in Hong Kong.
-The KGB agent is potentially a massive slut.
-The KGB knows your cover story. If the KGB agent gets in contact with a CIA asset, your cover will be blown.

-The Stasi agent is in Hong Kong.
-The Stasi is looking for blueprints, though we don't know why yet.

"Good work indeed, Armando. We'll be seeing you again." Slipping into my suit jacket once more, I unlock the door and stride back out into the airport.

Well, at least I don't have far to go to catch my plane. Time to head to Hong Kong. If I can call ahead, maybe HQ can keep the KGB and Stasi from escaping. Then maybe I can finally deal with this nonsense.
SpoilerShow
Your call doesn't go unheeded. Your phone rings the minute you land in Hong Kong.

"Agent Huojin!" It's Mr. Cain. "Good work, good work. So you've found the source of our little problem - and then some, I hear."

"Sir," you confirm.

"Now, I know this isn't quite your style, but I've requisitioned an assault team for you." He pauses to take a drag from his cigar. "The agents you're looking for are off in the airport's filing cabinet. I want them alive."

You're mildly disappointed, but you can understand why.

"Sir," you confirm.

"Good. There's a plane ready to take you all back to Santa Barbara once you've rounded up the little troublemakers."

"Sir." You confirm.

He hangs up and you have little trouble finding the assault team. They're the only ones in the airport with the submachine guns and balaclavas. You lean towards the door for a second, and listen in. Looks like the Stasi agent wants to get some intel about Koller out of the KGB. Even better for you.

Kicking in the doors, you and the other CHAOS agents hold the group at gunpoint.

"Well, then," you say. "Now that you all have come to the conclusion that you're on the same side, allow me to introduce myself. Agent 'Orago', CIA. Better known as Huojin - agent of CHAOS."

The assault team puts the German and a Chinaman in plastic handcuffs and puts bags over all their heads. The KGB agent is even easier. Looks like the two of them had already subdued her.

"Mr. Cain wants you all alive. Which means we're all going to become very good friends. Just the four of us, and my acquaintance, Mr. Electrode."

It's going to be a long flight - and even still, it probably won't be quite long enough.

SpoilerShow
Widow's Peak, 18XX

The west beckons. To some, she speaks of freedom. To others, she speaks of gold. Maybe there's not much difference between those. Word on the range is that they're close to finding the Treasure of the Tierra Madre. Old Spanish treasure trove - think real old. Think conquistadores old. They say there's more gold hidden in that stash than there is in all the mountains of California. They say there's enough gold here to make Senor Roberto Vega piss in his boots. If Vega ever wore a boot in his life, that is.

That's why he's looking for it, they say. To make sure no lucky son of a bitch this side of the Mississippi will ever be as rich as him. They say he's already got part of the map.

Bad news for him is that he's not the only one looking. On one hand, I can count Coronel Emilio Vargas, the Mexican warlord, looking to use the treasure to outfit and army to reconquer Aztlan. There's William "the Terror of the" West, the most infamous bandit these parts has ever seen, and hot on his heels, the Masked Man with No Name, the sharpest bounty hunter to ever strap an iron to his belt. Then there's Wild Horse, that old Lakota warchief. They say he's gone gold-mad himself.

I don't believe that. He's not looking for gold - he's looking for blood. Hell, half of them are. More than half, if you include me. All in all, that's six of us looking for the treasure, or, at least, looking for someone else dumb enough to try to look for the treasure. Six treasure hunters. Six bullets in a revolver. Fancy that.
Covert Colt Single Action is back!

Set in the old American west, six treasure hunters are hot on the trail of an ancient Spanish treasure - only catch is that half of them are also out for revenge on one of the others.

This will take place in two parts - the gathering of the clues to find where the treasure is located, and the final showdown at the gates of the fabled Tierra Madre itself.

The map will be split into four different terrain types - cities, plains, mountains, and desert. Depending on the character you're assigned, you'll have a terrain specialty, granting bonus to rolls when in favorable terrain, and you choose a special loadout when starting the game, granting further terrain bonuses you can use to increase your edge or increase the number of locations in which you can fight favorably.

The Informants/Junior Agents from Moonbeam are converted this time into Posse Members, who can be individually assigned to gather clues in any of the locations. They are, of course, no match for a trained treasure hunter (ie, a player character).

I'll be putting the map together over the next few, but the rest of the game is basically written.

Like all Covert Actions, PM me to sign up.

Apparently, there's more activity on here these days.

The Tierra Madre's still waiting on 3 treasure hunters (those who have PMed me before, though, feel free to do so again to reaffirm interest - if I get more than 3 new signups, I may boot some of the older sign ups if I can't get a hold of them again.)
